DIOCESE OF CHARLESTON
TECHNOLOGY STANDARDS
K - 8
The Diocesan standards, based on the ISTE National Educational Technology Standards, identify skills and knowledge every student needs to succeed in the technology and information environment now and in the future. In addition to basic technology competence, students are required “to learn effectively and live productively” by showing abilities in the following areas:
Demonstrate creativity and innovation
Communicate and collaborate
Conduct research and use information
Think critically, solve problems, and make decisions
Practice digital citizenship
Use technology effectively and productively
Recognizing each school’s financial limitations concerning funding technology upgrades, it is still important that the learning environment and activities be age-appropriate, integrated within the content areas with teacher supervision and recognizing the diocesan policies regarding technology.
This curriculum is a guideline from which Catholic educators can provide basic instruction within the context of our Catholic faith. The goal is to teach the skills and strategies needed for students to become productive, literate Catholic citizens who serve, improve and enrich our society.
Our aim is: • To provide a framework to assist Diocesan teachers in their preparation of instruction while integrating technology skills and knowledge
• To improve the consistency of Technology instruction and integration within the Diocese and within individual schools
• To provide a vehicle for improved communication among teachers in the Diocese
• To enable teachers to provide a rigorous, current instruction in a more Technological and global environment.
The framework is based primarily on the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) National Educational Technology Standards (NETS). It should be implemented using a variety of instructional approaches and fully integrated within other subject areas. For each grade level grouping, a numerical identifier is provided for each performance indicator.
